Appledore is a maritime village on the north Devon coast. It is at the meeting point of the Torridge and Taw rivers. The village is two miles from Westwood Ho!

Shops

Johns (the Quay)– good range of food and drinks, Post Office, and Delicatessen next door

Food and drink

The eating places are all reviewed Trip Adviser.   However, some of the locations given are a bit misleading, for example the The Royal Place (see below) is rated as a Bideford restaurant but is in the centre of Appledore.  https://www.tripadvisor.co.uk/Restaurants-g1093769-Appledore_Devon_England.html

Our personal comments are below.  All the pubs are dog friendly.

Pubs

The Seagate (the Quay).  01237 472 589 https://theseagate.co.uk/

Split between pub and restaurant.   Like all restaurants in Appledore worth booking in advance.   Good location on the quay.

The Beaver (Irsha Street).    01237 474822

http://www.beaverinn.co.uk/

Live music several nights a week, mini-golf, pub quiz on Weds.  Popular with locals and visitors alike – friendly place with a good selection of food.   Check in advance if you are veggie or vegan – they may be able to do something specific for you if the menu that day does not suit you (but I guess this is less likely at very busy times).

The Royal George (Irsha Street) 01237 424 138

Fantastic location and views out.  Really a restaurant with a snug if you are just having a drink.   We recommend advance booking, via their website.    Have eaten here several times and would recommend.  Try to sit upstairs (for the view) if you get that option when booking, although if you are taking your dog you will need to sit downstairs.

The Champ (Meeting Street) – live music several nights a week.  Small and with loads of character (in a good way) https://www.facebook.com/The-Champ-at-Appledore-127550820604836/

The Royal (Market Street).  You can have food sent in from the chip shop opposite.  This is a good choice if you want to watch Sky Sports, or want somewhere quieter behind the Quay. https://www.facebook.com/groups/631998150239322/

Restaurants

Flame Factory (the Quay) – https://www.flamefactory.org.uk/

Pizza and grill.  Eat in and takeaway. We advise booking in advance – and in peak season that may be before you come down to Appledore.   During the summer the restaurant is open from 12-11pm.   It does an early sitting (6:00 PM) and a later (8:00 PM) sitting. Booking at least a week ahead is recommended, epecially in school holidays.

We have eaten here several times and it is a really good family run place.

Fish and Chips

The Royal Plaice (Market Street) – eat in or takeway fish and chip shop.  Opposite The Royal (pub) https://theroyalplaiceappledore.co.uk/

Sylvesters (Meeting Street) – fish and chip shop  https://www.facebook.com/Sylvesters-Fish-Chip-Shop-Appledore-129251750431324/

Cafes – daytime not evening

Coffee Cabin (the Quay) – eat in and take away (currently take away, or tables outside), very good brunches and breakfasts https://www.facebook.com/22TheCoffeeCabin/

Curry Van

There is a curry van which visits Appledore on most Friday evenings between 5-7pm. It sells several choices of curry, usually one meat Indian curry, one vegetarian Indian curry and a couple of South East Asian dishes, one of which may well be veggie. The van parks outside the Appledore Community Centre, next to Richmond Dock (walk along the Quay, past Johns and round the bend, once you pass the antique shop you should see it ahead of you). Around £6 will get you curry and rice.
