Appledore does not have a sandy beach but there is access to rockpools.  The main family beaches nearby are The Burrows, Instow and Westward Ho!

The Burrows – head towards Westward Ho! and there are two access roads – the first for the Appledore facing side, the second gives you access to Westward Ho! beach.  Parking/access fees apply May to September.   Lots of birdlife.

Instow – across the estuary.  Access by ferry (tide and season dependent) or by car. Some beach (even at high tide). Excellent for dog walking.  Several good cafes, pubs and restaurants in Instow.

Westward Ho! – fantastic huge wide beach.  Good for bodyboarding and surfing but also child friendly as the beach is very shallow.

Crow Point – just across the estuary, on the other side of the river Taw from Instow, and a few hundred metres over the water, or a longish drive round by land, via Barnstaple, and then turn left when signed, before Braunton. Crow Point is down a toll road, which costs £2 to use (including parking). It is always pretty quiet and a good spot for walking dogs or just exploring in the dunes and beach. You get some great views of Appledore and Instow from Crow Point itself.
