Cycling – the Tarka Trail is just the other side of the Torridge river to Appledore. It provides a safe traffic-free cycle and walking route over many miles of North Devon. For more details take a look at these links:
https://www.tarkatrail.org.uk and,
Devon County Council also have a good information page that includes route information, how to access the Tarka Trail and other cycling routes.: https://www.exploredevon.info/activities/cycle/tarka-trail-braunton-meeth/
If you do not have your own bikes with you, there are several bike hire sites on the Tarka Trail. The easiest place to join the trail from Appledore is to drive over the Torridge bridge, turn left towards Instow and park in one of the lay-bys. An alternative place to join the trail is Fremington Quay, which has ample parking, cycle hire and a highly recommended cafe.
Paddleboarding – the river Torridge is a great place for learning to paddle board. Lessons are available from a local water sports company, AB Adventure Boardsports, run by Amy: https://adventureboardsports.co.uk/pages/sup-rental. It’s good fun, relatively easy to learn, and a peaceful way to see the countryside from a different perspective. This is me and my daughter in the photo, on our first lesson.
